Northeast Sports Talent Hunt Tournament
Project Brahmastra was a civil–military cooperation initiative and a youth-focused sports programme conducted in Mizoram. The initiative used sport as a platform to identify emerging talent, build discipline and encourage positive pathways for young people, while promoting awareness against substance abuse and healthier lifestyles.
Date: 14th–18th October 2025
Location: Mizoram
Why We Are Doing It
The programme was designed to use sport as a developmental tool to identify and nurture talent, strengthen discipline and create meaningful opportunities for youth engagement in the Northeast. It also aimed to promote awareness around substance abuse and encourage constructive, goal-oriented lifestyles among young participants.
Led by WATO Trust in collaboration with the Late Jagannath Onkar Patil Foundation, and supported by the Assam Rifles, Mizoram Basketball Association, Sports Authority of India and other partners, the initiative brought together institutional stakeholders for youth development. Green Pacific Global Care Foundation (GPGCF) served as the Regional Partner, supporting regional engagement.
The programme featured a basketball talent identification drive and 3×3 tournament, along with an exhibition football match at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Aizawl. The event saw strong participation, with 94 teams registering, surpassing the previous record. Outstanding performers were awarded one-year sports scholarships. Participants were also given exposure to the Mizo Territorial Army Recruitment Drive, connecting sporting participation with wider opportunities for service and growth. (Sentinel India)
The programme finale on 18 October 2025 was concluded in the presence of the Hon’ble Governor of Mizoram, General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd.), who graced the exhibition football match and addressed the gathering on the importance of sport in promoting discipline, resilience and resistance to substance abuse. Overall, Project Brahmastra successfully brought together sport, youth engagement, civil–military partnership and social awareness, creating a meaningful platform for talent development and positive change.
The initiative provided young learners with an opportunity to observe the discipline, dedication, and professionalism of uniformed personnel at the Assam Rifles Dog Training Centre (ARDTC), while developing an age-appropriate understanding of the Armed Forces and their role in security, rescue, and humanitarian service.
A key aspect of the experience was the demonstration by trained service dogs, through which children were introduced to the values of discipline, teamwork, courage, responsibility, and trust. Learning through direct observation and interaction made these values tangible and meaningful for young minds.
Project DOSTI was designed to foster civil–military understanding and nurture respect, empathy, civic awareness, and a sense of responsibility among children from an early age. By taking learning beyond the classroom, the initiative created a purposeful experience through which children could better appreciate the people, institutions, and values that contribute to a safe, responsible, and compassionate society.
